London County Council Tramways (LCCT): Staff Registers

This series contains staff registers for London County Council Tramways and a complete index of drivers, motormen and conductors. The registers contain details of staff appointed prior to the formation of London County Council (LCC) Tramways in 1896 as the company bought up existing private horse and cable-car companies between 1896 and 1909 with a view to electrification. The registers cover the period during which electric tramcars were gradually being introduced to replace horse-drawn trams (the first LCC electric tramcar was introduced in 1901 and the last LCC horse car was withdrawn in 1915). Until 1908 when the Kingsway Subway under the River Thames was fully opened, the LCC Tramways system consisted of two physically separate systems - the North Side and the South Side. For most purposes the system continued to operate as North and South Side for many years. Contrary to the titles, these volumes contain details of staff working on trams on the system south of the river. In 1920 the registers were superseded by a card index.

Staff register for London County Council Tramways containing a numberical list of badge numbers 1-16000 recording the name of employee, date engaged, and depot at which they worked. Entries are not completed for every badge number. Also includes details for some motormen employed at depots owned by other London tram operators, including London United Tramways, Metropolitan Electric Tramways, South Metropolitan Electric Tramways, Walthamstow Corporation, West Ham Corporation and Croydon Corporation.

London County Council Tramways (Northern System) – Drivers

Staff register for London County Council Tramways containing a complete index of drivers (men who drove horse-drawn trams) and motormen (men who drove electric tramcars). The main section gives details of staff names and dates of birth, their 'designation' (probably former occupation), badge number, home address, dates of appointment and discharge, 'line' (probably name of depot were staff member was based), dates when pay was increased and 'remarks' giving reasons for leaving. Many left the service during a strike in May 1915, and others were transferred to the North Side or to a different grade of work, or enlisted in the army during World War I. Also contains an index recording names of staff and badge numbers. (Despite the title printed on the cover of the register, all the drivers in the register worked on the South side, and not the North side).
